Project Brief

This turf install was at an early learning centre in Redlynch. Two curved garden beds set within a concrete play area had tired, patchy grass. The soil was bare in spots and holding standing water after rain, so the beds needed proper work rather than a top-up.

We dug out the old struggling turf first. Once the beds were cleared, we brought in quality topsoil and spread it through both curved shapes. Fertiliser went in with the fill so the new grass had something to get going in. We levelled the base off before any turf went down.

Access was the tricky part. The only way in was a small pedestrian gate, too narrow for a machine. So all materials were carted in and out by wheelbarrow. The rolls of turf came in on a caged trailer and we barrowed them across the play area one load at a time. Same with the dug-out soil going the other way.

With the base prepped and levelled, we laid the new Sir Walter buffalo turf. Each slab was firmed into place and butted up tight so there were no gaps along the joins. The curved beds took a bit of cutting to fit neatly against the existing concrete paths and around the play features. The beds sit near a timber pergola, shade sails, a tree and a play speed sign, so we worked around all of that.

Once the turf was down we watered it in. The finished lawn fills both curved beds with even green grass, bordered by the concrete pathways. The muddy patches and puddles are gone. It's straightforward work, but on a childcare site where kids use the space every day it makes a real difference.

We do plenty of this kind of work across the region, including a recent turf install in Edmonton with a similar setup. Sir Walter holds up well in this climate and takes foot traffic, which suits a play area.

What was included

  • Dug out old struggling turf from two curved garden beds
  • Brought in quality topsoil and spread it through the beds
  • Added fertiliser into the fill
  • Levelled the base before laying turf
  • Laid new Sir Walter buffalo turf and firmed it into place
  • Carted all materials in and out by wheelbarrow through a narrow pedestrian gate
  • Watered the new turf in

Key Features

Narrow gate access

The only way onto the site was a small pedestrian gate. Turf, soil and green waste were all barrowed in and out by hand, no machine access.

Curved beds in a play area

The two beds are set within existing concrete paths. The turf was cut to fit the curves and butted up against the concrete edges.

Sir Walter buffalo turf

We laid Sir Walter buffalo, which handles foot traffic and the local climate well, over prepped topsoil and fertiliser.

Walkthrough

The Result

Both curved beds are now filled with even green turf, sitting flush against the concrete paths. The bare soil and standing water are gone, and the play area has a solid lawn the kids can use.
